The pumps can be individually controlled or linked with the wireless controller for synchronizing several pumps and their flow patterns. The pump has eight different pre-programmed flow rates.

The OW series allows for greater rotation and aiming of the flow output. The water pumps are held in place with a magnetic through-the-glass mount. With the OW series, they’ve been relocated in the external controller. Previous models had electronic control components inside the motor housing. This improvement will make the pump quieter and increase torque and water flow, while still maintaining a small pump size. The latest improvement to the line includes a switch from two-pole magnet impellers to four-pole units. The impellers also tend to make noise when switched on and off. Powerhead magnetic impellers have trouble starting up sometimes and can get stuck in the motor's magnetic field. Powerheads are not designed to be turned on and off like specialty wave-making water pumps. Power heads are hung from the lip of the aquarium or attached to the glass with suction cups. This narrow stream of water is deflected off of the glass, creating a wash of water. Power heads are best suited for blowing water behind a stack of live rock or aimed at the front of the aquarium glass. Some come with diverters that “soften the blow” of the high pressure. Powerheads usually produce a narrow stream of high-pressure water. Powerheads are similar to filter pumps because they produce a high-pressure water flow but are smaller in size.
